ADDRESS BY THE CHAIRMAN

Trisakti University, according to the Triad (Tridharma) of Institution of Higher Education, has the responsibility to provide services to the community in the form of the application of knowledge and technology, required by community. The application of knowledge to the community is to enhance the quality of the work force by improving their vision of knowledge, technology and their skills, until this can be used to enhance their quality of lives.

Through these activities, Trisakti University can expand its institution and curriculum by introducing appropriate technology and the applications of the results of the students’ field studies. The efforts taken by the Trisakti University to enhance its academic qualities runs concurrently with the efforts of the activities and our achievements.

Many activities have been carried on in order to enhance the quality of service to the community. Efforts are also being made to enhance the quality of the program itself, so that it can proceed effectively, efficiently and reach its target, at the same time improving the quality of the work force. This for example, is done by giving training in methodology  to the lecturers of the Trisakti University who provide services to community.

To meet the need of the community, the institute of Community Services has three centers, which are directed to anticipate and solve problems faced by the community in an integrated or multidiscipline manner.

The centers are as follows: the Center of Community and Regional Development, the Center of Community Education and Services and the Center of Hands-on Work Courses for students.

Each service center is lead by a Head, who is responsible to the Chairman of the Institute. In Cooperation with the local Government, the Institute now has four pilot-project areas in West Jakarta and three areas in Pandeglang Regency, West Java.

The programs carried out are expected to enhance the quality of the work force in the village communities by improving their knowledge, skill and appropriate technology. The technology is applied in fields that meet the requirements of the community.

The efforts made  to enhance the quality of the work force of the community is carried out through the cadre method, by training the few that are selected. After being trained, the cadres will pass on the knowledge and skill to the community. By doing so, the cadre training system is fulfilling the basis of service to the community, that is to be independent, in which the community is not the object, but the subject. To secure its continuity it tries to follow the Chinese philosophy, which says that providing a fishhook is better than just handing over the fish.

The Hands-on Work courses for students in the field have been developed into an optional intra-curricular program, valued at 2-3 credits. The  benefits for  a student who follows the activities, are :

  1. The deepening of the students understanding and experience regarding

Working and thinking in an interdisciplinary or cross-sectional manner

Facing the problems of village people or urban-poor communities in carrying out development

Comprehending better the whole context of village development

  1. Maturing the student’s thinking processes in carrying out ideas to solve the problems faced by the community, in a scientific and pragmatic manner,

  2. Providing the students with skills in performing community development

  3. Developing the students to become motivators and problem solvers

The community service activities performed by Trisakti University shows the strong commitment of the University in educating the nation to meet the mandatory of the preamble of the1945 Constitution.
